Reading at KGB Monday Night Poetry (New York, NY)
October 22, 2018 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm EDTFree
Shanna Compton with Ron Villanueva
For twenty years and counting, the Monday night poetry series at KGB Bar has welcomed poets and drawn standing-room only audiences into the dimly lit, red-painted lounge that formerly served as the headquarters of the Ukrainian Labor Home. “In the years since it opened in 1993, KGB has become something of a New York literary institution. Writers hooked up in the publishing world read here with pleasure and without pay to an adoring public over drinks almost every Sunday evening (fiction), Monday evening (poetry), and most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The crowd loves it. Admission is free, drinks are cheap and strong, and the level of excellence is such that KGB has been named best literary venue in New York City by New York Magazine, the Village Voice, and everyone else who bestows these awards of recognition.” —Denis Woychuck, KGB Founder.
R. A. Villanueva’s debut collection, Reliquaria, won the 2013 Prairie Schooner Book Prize. Villanueva’s writing has appeared online at Guernica, Prac Crit, and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency as well as in print publications, including Poetry, the American Poetry Review, AGNI, Gulf Coast, Virginia Quarterly Review, Bellevue Literary Review, DIAGRAM, and Rattle. His honors include the 2013 Ninth Letter Literary Award for poetry and fellowships from Kundiman and the Asian American Literary Review. He is a founding editor of Tongue: A Journal of Writing & Art.
